John Medeski, Vernon Reid, Cindy Blackman-Santana and Jack Bruce of Spectrum Road
Rock’s latest supergroup, Spectrum Road, is a quartet that spans genres and generations. Featuring Cream’s Jack Bruce on bass and vocals and Living Colour’s Vernon Reid on guitar, the band is rounded out by drummer Cindy Blackman-Santana (formerly of Lenny Kravitz’s band) and keyboardist John Medeski (from a jazz combo called Medeski, Martin and Wood). The group originally formed as a tribute to legendary jazz drummer Tony Williams, but has morphed into it’s own entity.
Their self-titled debut is out now, and they are currently on the road. Reid and Bruce have worked together before: Vernon guested on Jack’s 1990 solo album, A Question Of Time, and they’ve worked together on and off in the years since. But the opportunity to be in a band with Jack Bruce was a dream come true for Reid, a lifelong fan of Cream who grew up listening to classic rock radio.
While Spectrum Road is a brand new band, they realize that fans may show up hoping to hear Bruce sing some of his Cream classics. Reid says that it’s sometimes difficult to balance audience expectations with artistic integrity.
While Spectrum Road is expected to be an ongoing project, Reid reports that Living Colour is still very much an ongoing concern, and they’ll have a new album out in 2013. Bruce, meanwhile, has been shooting a documentary chronicling his collaborations with traditional Scottish musicians.
