City bans on sugary drinks are becoming increasingly familiar, and the city of Los Angeles may be the next to join in with trend that aims to combat childhood obesity.

L.A. city council member Mitchell Englander discussed his plans for a ban on selling sodas in vending machines at local parks and libraries as a way to provide healthier drink options for children.

Englander thought of the motion when his daughter was unable to purchase a drink from a vending machine that wasn’t loaded with sugar.

“As a father, and a longtime board member of the American Diabetes Association, the health of our children has long been a concern for me,” he said in a statement, according to CBS LA. “Providing healthier beverages in City vending machines is an easy way to make headway in the battle against diabetes and childhood obesity.”

Englander is expected to discuss the motion with the Arts, Parks, Health and Aging Committee and address the growing epidemic of childhood obesity.
