Today on ‘Tickets @2′ it’s a #2 charted hit for Marvin Gaye titled “What’s Goin’ On?’

It was written by Motown songwriters Al Cleveland and Four Tops member Renaldo “Obie” Benson. Gaye added lyrics and worked on the arrangement; the three were golfing buddies. Gaye wanted the group The Originals to record the song, but Benson and Cleveland prevailed that Gaye do it himself.

This was the first Motown  song to make a powerful political statement. Stevie Wonder and The Temptations were also recording more serious and challenging material, which was a departure from the Motown hits of the ’60s.

Marvin was a talented football player, while he never played in the NFL, he was good friends with Mel Farr and Lem Barney, who played for the Detroit Lions. “What’s Goin’ On” was an expression they used to greet each other, and Gaye used it for the title. Farr and Barney can be heard singing backup on the song.

When we play it between two and three we’ll take caller #12 at 1-800-232-KRTH (5784) to win a 4-Pack of tickets to attend the Southern California Test Drive Expo, the nations first ever ‘All Test Drive’ auto show…happening Fathers Day Weekend at the Long Beach Convention Center.
