This is one of those moments that Today host Kathy Lee will be wishing she had done her research before going on air. Talking with guest Martin Short on Wednesday, Kathy Lee made a major mistake by asking Short a seemingly innocent question about how his wife was doing.

The problem? Short’s wife died a year and a half ago from ovarian cancer. However, this was unknown to Kathy Lee and she continued to ask how long the two have been married and what keeps them in love.

Short acted like a pro on air during the awkward moment, but informed Kathy Lee during the commercial break about his wife. Coming back from commercial, Kathy Lee apologized for her mistake saying, “My apologies to him and his family.”
