Did You Know: “American Woman” By The Guess Who
If you want to win tickets to see Roger Waters perform “The Wall” at the L.A. Coliseum just be caller # 12 when we play “American Woman” by The Guess Who on ‘Tickets @ 2’ between two and three.
Randy Bachman explained the origins of the song in an interview with ‘Words & Music’ magazine in 2005.
“We were playing a gig in Kitchner, Ontario (Canada), and I broke a string. I was up there alnoe, tuning up me E and B strings on an old Les Paul. I started playing that riff and heads started turning in the audience. The band got up, and I said, ‘Keep playing this, I don’t want to forget it.’ When Burton had run out of solos, I yelled out, ‘Sing something!’ So out of the blue Burton screamed, ‘American Woman, stay away from me!’ That was the song, the riff and Burton yelling that line over and over.”
In the late-’90s, it was used in a variety of commercials, Tommy Hilfiger, Castrol motor oil, and Nike for women’s soccer.
