Top 10 Songs Mistaken As Love Songs

With Valentine’s Day just one week away, you might want to think twice before dedicating these “love songs” to express how much your sweetheart means to you. Masked with sweet melodies or upbeat tempos, these ten songs are often misinterpreted as being love songs, when in reality the lyrics are describing something completely different.

Whatever you do, don’t make the mistake of playing these songs for your Valentine!

#10. “Happy Together” – [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Turtles[/lastfm]

Sure with a positive title like “Happy Together” you’d think this song is about a couple in love, when it’s actually about unrequited love. The lyrics ask to “Imagine how the world could be, so very fine” if the singer was actually with his one true love, but in the end realizes they are nothing more than acquaintances.

#9. “I Will Always Love You” – [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Whitney Houston[/lastfm]

The lyrics to this #1 power ballad made famous by Whitney Houston are frequently misinterpreted about a couple who are together forever, and is often played at weddings. The lyrics are actually about always loving someone even though they aren’t the one and must let them go.

#8. “With Or Without You” – [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]U2[/lastfm]

It’s easy to disregard the lyrics when a song melody sounds so beautiful, but if you really pay attention to the lyrics, you’ll find it’s really about a tormented love. It’s no wonder Bono cries “I can’t live with or without you” when he sits “On a bed of nails/she makes me wait” for his love.

#7. “Cherish” – [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Association[/lastfm]

A sweet title and melody could fool anyone into thinking this is a love song, but while the singer does “cherish” the girl, he knows he can’t have her and comes off as obsessive. Now you’ll think twice about playing this song at your wedding.

#6. “Brandy (You’re A Fine Girl)” – [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Looking Glass[/lastfm]

Even though Brandy is a “fine girl and what a good wife” she could be, the subject of the song is really just a tease to all the sailors who fall for her, but she cannot return their feelings because she’s still in love with her one true love.

#5. “The One I Love” – [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]R.E.M.[/lastfm]

With the song starting out saying “this one goes out to the one I love,” many often think this is a love song when really it’s about moving on from “a simple prop to occupy my time.”

#4.”Something” – [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Beatles[/lastfm]

The song starts off promising when “something in the way she moves/attracts me like no lover” but when asked “will my love grow/I don’t know/I don’t know,” there’s obviously some major commitment issues going on there.

#3. “Easy” – [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Commodores[/lastfm]

Mistaken as a sweet love song, Lionel Richie is really singing about giving up on a relationship because it’s bringing him down. The breakup has a sense of calm that’s “easy like Sunday morning.”

#2. “The Best Of My Love” – [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Eagles[/lastfm]

If giving the “best of my love” means fighting (“we try to talk it over/but the words come out too rough”), drinking (“Look at the way that we live/Wastin’ our time on cheap talk and wine”) and the inability to agree on something (“You see it your way/and I see it mine/but we both see it slipping away”), then this song hits it right on the dot.

#1. “Every Breath You Take” – [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Police[/lastfm]

One of the most misinterpreted songs ever, The Police’s soothing ballad sounds sweet and innocent enough, but paying close attention to the lyrics will change your entire perspective of the song. It’s really about an obsessive love who’s stalking “every breath you take/and every move you make,” not something that really comes to mind in a love song.

Sting explained it best himself saying, “I think it’s a nasty little song, really rather evil. It’s about jealousy and surveillance and ownership.”
