Today’s ‘Tickets @ 2’ song is from L.A.’s [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Three Dog Night[/lastfm], it’s “Joy To The World.”
[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Hoyt Axton[/lastfm] wrote it for an animated TV special called The Happy Song that never got on the air. Hoyt was a popular Country singer/songwriter from Oklahoma, pitched it to the group while he opened for them on tour. Three Dog Night also had a top ten hit with “Never been to Spain,” which was also written by Axton.
The group didn’t think much of the song when they recorded it, tacking on to the album because they needed one more song to complete the album. It ended up being a massive hit and stayed 6 weeks at #1.
Three Dog Night took their name from an Australian Aborigine saying. If it was a cold night, you slept with your dogs for warmth. The next day you’d tell a friend, “Man, it was a three dog night last night.” Leading people to think that the group was Australian, when they were L.A. all the way!
When we play it between two and three we’ll take caller # 7 by calling 1-800-232-KRTH (5784) to win a pair of tickets to see “The Artist” at a Regal Entertainment Group Theatre.
