After an ugly divorce that forced putting the Dodgers franchise into bankruptcy, owner Frank McCourt has agreed to sell the team for as much as $1 billion. A few potential buyers have expressed interest in buying the Dodgers before, so who should take the team off McCourt’s hands?
“This is a swell day for Los Angeles,” Steve Lopez, a columnist for The Los Angeles Times, wrote Wednesday after the news broke. “I don’t know who will step up and buy this team, but whoever it is can’t do worse. You could grab anyone off the street and get better results.”
A few interested parties have surfaced to save the team from bankruptcy, including Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, former Dodgers Orel Hershiser and Steve Garvey, or maybe even Magic Johnson could step in to rebuild the team in addition to teaming up with AEG to bring an NFL team back to Los Angeles.
Former Dodgers owner Peter O’Malley has also voiced his interest on leading an investment group that would buy the Dodgers, allowing him to return as the chief executive. He sold the Dodgers to Fox in 1998 for $311 million, which Fox then sold to McCourt for $421 million in 2004.
Tell us who you would want to buy the Dodgers from Frank McCourt!
