Bruce Springsteen – The River (Columbia, 1980)

A set that took Springsteen nearly a year and a half to complete, The River is considered one of his finest recordings and is one of his best sellers.

Originally intended to be a single set called The Ties That Bind, The River evolved into a double album as the songs simply kept flowing from The Boss’ guitar.

Springsteen’s stock and trade — the lives of America’s working class — is at its best here on cuts like the restless “The Price You Pay” and his trademark love song, “Two Hearts.” Though there are rockers spread throughout, the first half of this 20-song collection leans to the upbeat side while the second fifty percent takes on a slightly darker tone.

Though all of Springsteen’s nearly dozen and a half studio albums have gone gold or better, The River has made a particularly strong showing at more than 5 million copies sold since its release in October of 1980.
