As an Academy Awards host vet, comedian Steve Martian offered up some of his unsolicited Oscar hosting advice to his friend and first-timer Oscar host Eddie Murphy.
Murphy has just been announced at this year’s host for the 84th Annual Academy Awards, and Martin has written an open letter full of helpful tips on making it through hosting the awards ceremony.
The letter first starts out congratulating Murphy on scoring the high-profile gig of hosting the Oscars this year by writing in his letter:
I heard you are hosting this year’s Oscars. First of all, CONGRATS. Even though you didn’t ask for my advice and specifically said, “please, no advice,” here are a few tips!
Whatever you do, don’t have a co-host. They’re a big pain and they just end up breaking your SNL hosting record…
Start slimming down now. You look kinda paunchy in Norbit.
His letter continues with more helpful “tips”that he’s learned from his experience of hosting the Oscars including:
Remember to relax and have a good time while 12,000 livebloggers rip you to shreds.
If you feel the show is running long, you’re probably thinking of 2010, 2009, 2008, 2007, 2006, 2005, 2004, or any of the shows in the ’90s
If you feel tired midway through, give Neil Patrick Harris a Red Bull and throw some sheet music at him.
The two comedians have been longtime friends and have even starred in the movie Bowfinger together, which Martin makes reference to in his letter, saying he thinks Murphy deserved an Oscar nomination for.
