United States Congressman and award-winning actress? How about Neanderthal man and breathtakingly cute singer?
Who’d have thought this pair — dressed for the ’60s, drenched in hippiedom, parked in the crotch of a tree somewhere — would go on to be pop stars, TV stars, politicians and product pitchers? Not many people could have guessed.
Photographed by Robert W. Young and designed by Haig Adishian, the cover of their first album, Look at Us, inspired me to do just that: look at them. Sonny didn’t impress me much — I thought: is that her father? — but the bangs-above-the-eyes haircut that framed Cher’s penetrating gaze took my breath away. Actually, it still does.
Oh, yeah…the music: A dozen cuts, lots of stuff from Ellie Greenwich and Jeff Barry, a nod toward [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Smokey Robinson and the Miracles[/lastfm] and of course, their biggest hit, “I Got You Babe.”
