Amazing ‘American Pie’ Viral Video Proves Grand Rapids Is Very Much Alive

americanpie Amazing American Pie Viral Video Proves Grand Rapids Is Very Much Alive

Grand Rapids Goes Don McLean on Newsweek

In January, Newsweek placed Grand Rapids, Michigan on a list of America’s “Dying Cities.” As they should be, many citizens of Grand Rapids were angry at the article and decided to do something about it. 5,000 people from the city got together to produce a record setting lip dub viral video. The video is set to [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Don McLean[/lastfm]’s “American Pie” and features marching bands, parades, weddings, and even helicopters. Plus, the whole video was filmed in one continuous camera shot!

After seeing the video, Newsweek did respond to it Facebook:

“To the Grand Rapids crowd: First off, we LOVE your YouTube LipDub. We’re big fans, and are inspired by your love of the city you call home.

But so you know what was up with the list you’re responding to, we want you to know it was done by a website called—not by Newsweek (it was unfortunately picked up on the Newsweek web site as part of a content sharing deal)—and it uses a methodology that our current editorial team doesn’t endorse and wouldn’t have employed. It certainly doesn’t reflect our view of Grand Rapids.”

Hats off to Grand Rapids for organizing and executing such a great video! You all did a great job!

KUDOS to the people of GRAND RAPIDS and for an AWESOME video. People should be proud of where they caome from. I’m proud to be Canadian and of my parents Latvian heritage and I would LOVE To make a video like t6hat promoting my home town of Scarborough Ontario one day.

Scarborough is suburb of Toronto (located est of the city) and is where I was born and raised until 1992 when I moved further west of Scarborough and Toronto to a town called Mississauga (spelled like your Mississippi, but with “auga” replacing your “ippi”. It’s pronounced “awga” and not like “owga”. Mississauga is an Indian word named after a group of Indians that used to live their hundres of years ago.

Scarborough (named after a town in England, duet Canada’s ties to England) has a population of roughly 500, 000 people and Mississauga, 800,0000 (both are growing communities. Toronto as a whole has a population of 5 000 000 If you include the outlying areas called the GTA or greater Toronto area).

Both cities have veveloped much of theyears (so much progress) and continues to do so. Toronto is the 5th largest city in North America (after Mexico City, New York, Los Angelas and Chicago and is the third largest market for movies in NA after LA and NY).

That video has given me a dream to hopefull y one day s RainbowRay to return to Toronto and do a video like Grand Rapids did for my home town of Scarborough (I think that would be amazing and would definately have the “love returning” one day, don’t you think?)

The song, “American Pie” by Don Mclean has been one of my favorites for years, but there is another song you can check out on YOUTUBE that’s very special to me and that I play often and have added to my playlist called, “To Have and To Hold”. It’s a wedding song and I first heard it back in the 90’s and suggested it to someonef from work who used it for a wedding he went to in Pakistan back then.

It’s a terrifica wedding song and the video (on YOUTUBE) is totally amazing with flying seagulls and the works> Check it out when you get the chance. It’s called “To Have and To Hold!” I dram of Fiona every time I play it and am constantly dreaming of meeting her im Memphis and proposing to her one day (even have worked out where and how it will be done; believe me, it6 won’t be in 20 minutes tyope of thing believe me. It will take at least 3, maybe 4, even 5 days to do this because as they say, you only get one chance in a lifetime to do this as it changes your life forever and I want to do it “right: and make it as romantic and creative as possilbe). They say, it’s all about “her” when you propose and I have done that it, but it also about us and about mys tory as well (which she knows very well about as she should). Encorporating all three (her, myslef and us) will make the event that much more special, but then again not everyone will agree with that no matter the story or the circumstances, but it’s not their life were talking about here). Trust me, it6 will be very special for the both of us (especially her when the time comes).

Seing how that video from Grand Rapids was made in one camera shot, it reminds me of a ovie that I asw some time agoa (a foreign move) that was made in “one take” called “The Russian Ark”. Made in Ruasia back in the 90’s I beleive, the story takes oplace in a Russian castle and the camera goes into each room in that castle looking into life in different times there (all in one shot which was totally amazing for a movie whose lenth is a little over an hour and a half believe).. A fascinating movie to watch and you probably can rent it (Blockbuster has gone belly up in Canada due to everyone streamlining movies now), buy it if you look around or even streamline it if you can; the library may also have it if you look around. A tremendous movie.

Just one miore footnote to that “extremely long” blog; I went yesterday to see the movie “Bridesmaids”. One hilarious movie!! I absolutely loved it and of course was dreaming about Fiona (wished she wast here with me because obviously it felt rather lonely). A few of the scenes brought back flashbacks of times together. Worth getting when it6 comes out on DVD. FOUR BRIDAL BOUQUETS OUT OF FIVE.
