The Intruders "I'll Always Love My Mama"

One of the most popular songs for Mother’s Day has been a Philly Soul classic since 1973.

Legendary Philadelphia producers [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Kenny Gamble[/lastfm] and [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Leon Huff[/lastfm] were just beginning their creative teamwork in the mid-1960s. They chose a local street-corner group to launch their new production venture … [lastfm link_type="artist_info"] the Intruders[/lastfm].

The act featured the distinctive lead voice of Sam “Little Sonny” Brown but had been unable to record any chart hits. That changed big time when they were taken under the wings of Gamble & Huff.

The duo began writing and producing some great songs for the Intruders. “(We’ll Be) United” and “Together” set the stage for what was to come next in 1968 when they scored a national million-seller with “Cowboys To Girls.” After it hit the national pop Top 10 (and was #1 on the Soul chart) the Intruders were well on their way to stardom.

But, as often happens Behind The Hits, there were tensions growing within the act. Little Sonny left and was replaced by Bobby Starr, who got them another R&B Top 10 with a revival of the song “When We Get Married” (originally by the Dreamlovers).  Yet the pop hits again became elusive.

Brown returned as lead singer in 1973, just in time for the album Save The Children, which included “I’ll Always Love My Mama.”  Like many Gamble-Huff productions it was recorded as a long LP track, which was broken down into Parts 1 & 2 for the single release.

Since we want mom to feel like she’s worth the extra time, here’s the full-length version. Send her a link to this page with a note about how much YOU will always love YOUR mama!
