Have you ever wondered about how the Stones got together? On May 2, 1962, Brian Jones, the [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Rolling Stones[/lastfm]‘ original guitarist, placed an ad in a high-profile music magazine with hopes to recruit other members for the group.
The publication “Jazz Times” featured his ad, and his first response was from a pianist named Ian Stewart. This is when when history was made. [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Mick Jagger[/lastfm] and his longtime friend [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Keith Richards[/lastfm] also saw the ad and went for an audition at a London club called the Bricklayer’s Arms.
Geoff Bradford and Brian Knight, well-known local blues musicians, also appeared at the audition, but decided not to join because they weren’t fans of [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Chuck Berry[/lastfm] like the other members.
Bassist [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Bill Wyman[/lastfm] also turned up for an audition and the group accepted him. He owned a highly sought after Vox AC30 amplifier plus he was willing to share his cigarettes. The newly formed group later recruited rising jazz drummer [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Charlie Watts[/lastfm] as well.
