As far as I was concerned, Gary “U.S.” Bonds was just “breaking into the scene” in 1981 when he went Top 10 with “This Little Girl.” Little did I know that his very first single, “Quarter To Three,” had been a huge hit (and a huge influence) way back in 1961. In fact, it was named by [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Bruce Springsteen[/lastfm] as one of the songs that set him on the road to rock and roll stardom.
It should be no surprise then that it was Bruce, Little Steven Van Zant, and the E Street Band who collaborated with “U.S.” to bring him back to popularity in the 1980s. As much as I like “This Little Girl,” it was the less popular “Out Of Work”–Springsteenian through-and-through–that I prefered. Well into the 1990s, this one filled the dance floor. (And, in 2011, the lyrics sadly still ring true.)
