Discover Kauai: Spouting Horn Park
We love being Your Official Hawaiian Vacation, giving away TWO stays to Hawaii to everyone who wins. Our current Hawaii vacation destination is the Kauai Marriott Resort on Kalapaki Beach on Kauai. One of the best things to do while in Hawaii is taking in the sights of the island. Located on the South Shore of Kauai is the Spouting Horn blowhole, which is known to be one of the most photographed spots on Kauai, so be sure not to forget your camera!
It was believed the area where the Spouting Horn is located was once guarded by a lizard named Kaikapu, which everyone was afraid of since legend said that it would try to eat anyone who attempted to swim or fish there. One day a young boy tried to outsmart Kaikapu. Upon entering the ocean, he was attacked by the lizard. He then proceeded to put a stink into the lizard’s mouth and was able to escape through a small hole in the lava shelf. Of course, the lizard tried to catch the boy and got stuck in the lava tube.
During large swells, The Poipu surf goes into that natural lava tube and releases a large spout of water about 50 feet into the air. The hiss and roar heard during this process is based on the Hawaiian legend of the lizard, which is the its roar and breath spraying from the hole.
