South By Southwest Music is celebrating its 25th year next week, and it’s invited veteran rocker and campaigner Bob Geldof as its Keynote Speaker and Showcase Performer. Geldof will appear along with some 2000 other artist during the annual music festival and conference, taking place March 16-20 in Austin, Texas.

Geldof is probably better known these days for his humanitarian work than his original music, most notably the charity events Live Aid and Live 8, and the superstar recording group Band Aid. Last.fm Trends takes a look at the career of the Irish artist and activist via his scrobbles.

The 1984 collaborative effort Band Aid, however, is the true juggernaut of popularity. “Do They Know It’s Christmas,” co-written by Geldof, has gained the group 686,212 plays from 232,481 listeners, all of them for various versions of that one seasonal song.

boomtowntrend From Live Aid To Songs That Will Sell: Last.fm Trends Checks Out SXSW Keynote Speaker Bob GeldofGeldof’s early new wave band The Boomtown Rats has more dedicated fans, but less of them: the band has earned 1,042,390 plays from 168,479 listeners. “I Don’t Like Mondays” is far and away their biggest hit and has a steady listenership for a song 32 years old. But again it can’t match up to that Christmas smash.

Having concentrated more on humanitarian efforts than selling records of late, a new album named How To Compose Popular Songs That Will Sell is an ironic take on a varied career.

Considering his varied career, and the fact he was the writer of one of the biggest-selling singles of all time , he should have a good few tales to tell during his keynote address in Austin next week.
