Today’s Tickets a Two hit to listen for is Billy Joel’s “Piano Man.”

This was inspired by Billy Joel’s experiences playing at The Executive Room on Wilshire Boulevard here in L.A. He worked there for 6 months in 1972 after his first album, Cold Spring Harbor, tanked. But his experiences working there helped inspire the lyrics of this great classic hit.

The characters in the song are based on real people Joel encountered while working at the Cocktail ‘Piano’ Bar.

Billy played under the name Bill Martin, which explains why the patron in the song call him Bill. Martin is his middle name. He called the six month stint a “gig to pay the rent.”

We’ll take caller # 18 at 1-800-232-KRTH. (5784) when we play it between two and three for [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Katherine McPhee[/lastfm] concert tickets!
