After selling over 150 million records worldwide, OMG! from Yahoo is reporting that 7 time GRAMMY winner [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Phil Collins[/lastfm] is retiring from music due to health problems.

The 60-year-old musician, singer, writer, producer has spent almost 50 years in the entertainment industry. At age 13 Phil appeared in the London production of Oliver! and has been in and around music almost all his life.

Phil reportedly has hearing problems, a dislocated vertebra, and nerve damage in his hands, all caused according to him from being hunched over a drum set for so many years.

In a recent FHM magazine interview, Phil reportedly said, “I don’t think anyone’s going to miss me,” according to the UK’s Daily Telegraph. “I look at the MTV Music Awards and I think, ‘I can’t be in the same business as this.’ I don’t really belong to that world… “

The former [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Genesis[/lastfm] frontman reportedly plans on spending the bulk of his time raising his two sons, Nicholas and Matthew.

“I’m not worried about not being able to play the drums again, I’m more worried about being able to cut a loaf of bread safely or building things for my kids,” he reportedly told FHM. “My doctors tell me it’s a work in progress, that it will take about a year for me to recover.”

When asked how long it would take him to recover enough to play drums like he once did, Collins responded, “I don’t think I’ll ever be able to do that again.”

Wow. What a shame, he’s such a talent!
The drummers I know aren’t so gravely affected…hearing loss definately. (Or is it selective? ) I would think that any of the ‘older’ artists have hearing loss because it was serious sex, drugs and rock & roll (and no ear plugs!) for the bedrock of our Rock ‘n Roll boys!!

I had the pleasure of partying with Keith Moon in London for 3 days (almost killed me:) when “Tramps” was the hot private club…He had another side to him (“Tommy” was at it’s peak when we met)
One evening he played for me all his ‘private’ recordings….his heart and soul was in those songs. He was “burnt out” while in the midst of the Who’s success, he didn’t want to be who he was.
When he passed I was so sad. He had shared his fears, and they all came true.
High price to pay.

Sorry to hear he’s retiing; I love his music and his work from his Genesis Days (“It’s No Fun Being an Illegal Alien” is one of my favourites [Canadian spelling]). “You Can’t Hurry Love “(you ain’s just whistling dixie brother) is another one.

Hey, your health is more important right? Will miss him though.
