For Big Bear Mountain Resort lift tickets be caller # 5 when we play “Stand By Me” by [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Ben E. King[/lastfm].

King recorded this shortly after leaving [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Drifters[/lastfm], giving him a solid reputation as a solo artist. He wanted The Drifters to record it, but the group’s manager rejected the idea.

Based on a 1955 Gospel song by [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Staple Singers[/lastfm], King brought it to the legendary songwriting team of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, who gave it a more contemporary sound. The bassline at the beginning was Mike Stoller’s idea.

The hit originally reached # 4 on the US Chart, #1 in the UK, which may have been why John Lennon recorded a version in 1975.

The song had another life in the movies, it was used in the 1986 movie of the same name starring River Phoenix.

Caller # 5 at 1-800-232-KRTH (5784) will be today’s ‘Tickets @ 2’ winner!

What you probably don’t know is that in the ’60s an italian artist by the name of Adriano Celentano recorderd “Pregherò” (which means “I will pray”) on the notes of “Stand By Me.” He forgot (for lack of better words) to mention that his song was a cover. It was rectified a few years later.

A great song that I remember first listening to when I was in my teens. I think of Fiona when I hear this song as I am doing now as I right this blog, listening to the great Ben E. King. I wonder what she’s doing right now???? Hmmmm! Love you Fiona and am missing you and thinking about you as I listen to this great song. This song also helps me spiritually as well as I make my way. “Keeping the baby faith!” (Rockin Mel Slurp of Mel’s Rock Pile, SCTV which I remember in it’s early days taping in Toronto back in the mid to late seventies).
