There are only days left until the The 83rd Academy Awards, and as Hollywood’s stars wait with bated breath, there are a few musicians who’ll be crossing their fingers, too.

Last.fm Trends is looking at the nominees for Best Original Score and Best Original Song, and investigating their scrobbles (the listening trends among Last.fm users) to see who might be crowned king or queen of the silver screen.

There are some heavy hitters in the running for Best Original Score, with all nominees gaining over 2 million plays from Last.fm users. Hans Zimmer (Inception) is the most-scrobbled with 25,482,835 plays from 695,763 listeners – and he’s won the award previously, for The Lion King.

When it comes to popular music however, there’s not much competition for Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (The Social Network). As a duo they’ve only gained 50,248 listeners so far, but Reznor’s work with Nine Inch Nails has a huge 1,467,632 listeners on Last.fm. The Golden Globes agreed, awarding them Best Original Score. A.R. Rahman (127 Hours) won both Best Original Song and Best Original Score in 2009 for Slumdog Millionaire, but this category looks too close to call.

Rahman’s “If I Rise” has only 821 scrobbles from 339 listeners, despite his previous wins. Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi have gained 2,104 listeners for “I See The Light” from Tangled, but 2002 winner Randy Newman is really the one to beat for wide popularity, with “We Belong Together” from Toy Story 3.

Find out who wins when the Oscars are held this Sunday, 27th February. Meanwhile, Last.fm Trends brings you the latest news in scrobbles every weekday.
