Whilst rock music is most often thought of as bands of musicians making as much noise as possible, it’s the voices that wrench at the heart strings of listeners all over the world. This is where the category for Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance comes in at this year’s Grammy Awards.

This year’s list of nominees includes some of the most famous singers the world has ever seen. Last.fm Trends looks at which vocal star might be leaving with a Grammy on February 13.

Led Zeppelin‘s Robert Plant is one of the nominees, recognized for his track “Silver Rider” which has 35,330 total scrobbles since its release from the album Band of Joy in September 2010.

Eric Clapton, one of the most influential guitarists of all time, is nominated for his song “Run Back To Your Side.” Despite only having 12,450 scrobbles, the name of Eric Clapton alone will surely make him as strong a contender as any to win the award.

Picking up his third nomination at this year’s awards is Neil Young. He is nominated for his track “Angry World” (30,143 scrobbles), which is also nominated for Best Rock Song. His 2010 album Le Noise is nominated for Best Rock Album.

Paul McCartney is probably the most coveted star in the category – nominated for his live solo take on The Beatles‘ “Helter Skelter.” The original track has 1,553,714 total scrobbles and may go some way to indicating who may be winning this category.

John Mayer can count himself as the youngest of nominees – however he is certainly not shy of the limelight. Since 2003 he has won seven Grammy Awards and could take that into double figures if he wins all the categories he is nominated for this year. The 409,440 scrobbles of “Crossroads” represents him in this category, whilst album Battle Studies and track “Half Of My Heart” represents him in the categories for Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance, respectively.

The Grammy Awards are getting closer. Make sure to tune into CBS on February 13 to watch it.
