On ‘Tickets @ 2’ the song to listen for is “Unchained Melody” by [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Righteous Brothers[/lastfm].

The song first appeared in the 1955 movie Unchained, starring former L.A. Ram football player Elroy “Crazy Legs” Hirsch. The movie takes place in a prison.

Alex North wrote the music, Hy Zaret¬†wrote the lyrics and a singer named Todd Duncan sang the movie version. He became a popular vocal coach. When the movie came out, an orchestral version by Les Baxter was released along with a version by Al Hibbler. Baxter’s version hit #1 in the US; while Hibbler’s went to #3.

[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Righteous Brothers[/lastfm] version was a huge hit, but it was released on the B-side of “Hung on You,” many DJ’s preferred to flip the single over and play “Unchained Melody.” This infuriated Phil Spector, Phil produced “Hung on You” while Bill Medley produced “Unchained Melody.”

Sadly Bobby Hatfield who sang lead, having the higher voice than Bill Medley died of a heart attack at age 63.

When we play it between two & three be caller #10 at 1-800-232-KRTH (5784) to win HAIR tickets at the OC Performing Arts Center.
