Regis Philbin Announces He’s Leaving ‘Live With Regis and Kelly’
Lisa Stanley broke the news this morning that talk show legend Regis Philbin announced during his show that he will be stepping down from Live With Regis and Kelly this summer.
After holding one of the longest runs as individual host on the same TV show for the past 28 years, 79-year-old Regis Philbin has decided to step down from his morning talk show throne. He’s hosted ‘Live’ with just two co-hosts, Kathy Lee Gifford and current co-host Kelly Ripa, over the 28 years.
He broke the news to viewers during his opening conversation with Ripa saying, “Well, I’ve got one of those announcements to make.” He added that he didn’t “want to alarm anybody” before declaring to producer Michael Gelman, “It’s going to happen. The station needs to know and Gelman needs to know and we all need to know. But this will be my last year.”
Philbin didn’t address a specific reason for leaving the show saying, “There is a time. Everything must come to an end for certain people on camera — for certain old people.” Later in the show he added that he isn’t retiring from the show saying, “I’m not going to retire, I will just be gone.”
So now that Regis is leaving his post on his longtime morning talk show, who do you think will step in as his replacement with Ripa? Is there anyone else that has as much energy as Philbin to get your morning started each day?
