He was born on July 4th in West Virginia and was only 13 when his father died. He enlisted in the Navy at age 18 and served for nine years, during which time he became interested in singing and writing songs. Soon after his discharge from the Navy he relocated in Los Angeles.
Withers worked as an assembler for several different companies, including Douglas Aircraft, while recording demo tapes with his own money, shopping them around to record labels, and performing in clubs at night.
At the 14th annual Grammy Awards in 1972, Bill won a Grammy Award for best R&B Song for “Ain’t No Sunshine.”
Withers recorded his second album, Still Bill, with the single from the album “Lean On Me” landing at number one the week of July 8, 1972…nice birthday present for Bill Withers.
