“Lean On Me” by Bill Withers hit the top spot on the chart (#1) in 1972. Bill said at the time: “Because this was from my second album, I could afford to buy myself a little Wurlitzer electric piano. I was sitting there just running my fingers up and down the piano. In the course of doing the music, that phrase crossed my mind, ‘OK, I like the way that phrase, Lean On Me, sounds with this song.” And a hit was created.
Withers didn’t record his first song until he was 32 years old. Bill served his country in the US Navy for 9 years then worked in factory making airplane parts.
Kid Rock, Sheryl Crow, and Keith Urban performed an emotional version of the song on the charity telethon, ‘Hope for Haiti Now: A Global Benefit for Earthquake Relief’ held last January.
