(Review by C.C. Mitchell)
With the new release Viva Elvis–The Album, fans of The King can relive Elvis and his music in a whole new context. The classic songs of [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Elvis Presley[/lastfm], the undisputed King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, are brought back to life in this new album, based on the Cirque du Soleil show Viva Elvis.
Viva Elvis re-imagines the vocal performances of The King in a variety of new musical settings. “Suspicious Minds,” for instance, is sung in true “Elvis” splendor, with fresh musical twists and turns, yet the emotional resonance of his commanding vocal work is still in place.
Take a look and a listen to a live performance of “Suspicious Minds”!
Legacy Recordings (in partnership with Elvis Presley Enterprises, Inc.) is behind Viva Elvis–The Album, based on the musical that Cirque du Soleil is currently performing in Las Vegas. Produced and arranged by Erich van Tourneau, with assistant producer and assistant arranger Hugo ‘Wedge Montecristo’ Bombardier, the songs may be “re-imagined,” but they still cater to the devoted fan, and perhaps will welcome new ones to The King’s musical magic.
The songs here paint the portrait of the larger-than-life Presley even closer to completion. Some of the recordings show subtle yet poignant changes in key and tempo, while others incorporate elements of modern-day hip-hop and punk. “King Creole” is a fresh, toe-tapping rendition that could appeal across genres. And most of all, these “new” recordings honor and respect the bold, brash, yet enchanting qualities of Presley’s music.
