[lastfm]Elton John[/lastfm], totally sober and a healthy 63-years-old, has lived an admirably full and adventurous life, but he recently relayed a story that we think is sort of shocking and horrible in a new documentary called Madman Across The Water: The Making Of Elton John. John says that years ago his “friends” spiked his dinner with cocaine so that he would play the piano all night.
Elton John explains about the event that happened in late 60s and early 70s: “I left at 7.30 in the morning and I thought, ‘I’ve never stayed up until 7.30 before but I feel really good!’ Years later I learned they had put cocaine in my food.”
Rocker Danny Hutton, who played in US rock band [lastfm]Three Dog Night[/lastfm], said he was behind the spiking, saying: “I might have forgot to tell him. Well it certainly didn’t hurt him. He went on to be quite successful.”
It’s one thing to decide yourself that you are going to take drugs and it’s another thing to be slipped drugs unknowingly. We think Danny Hutton’s answer is flippant and unacceptable. True, Elton John became very famous, but giving someone a drug without their knowledge is akin to attempted manslaughter. You never know whether someone has a condition and how it is going to affect them.
