The Eagles Close Out Austin City Limits In A Big Way!

When you have a “hit list” like [lastfm]The Eagles[/lastfm], it’s not so much a question of what to play, it’s more like “how do we fit everything in a two-hour set?”

At the 2010 Austin City Limits Music Festival this past weekend, The Eagles pulled it off.

Despite some criticism from the “hardcores” (I call them “indie freaks”), choosing a band like [lastfm]The Eagles [/lastfm]to close out a massive music festival such as ACL was actually a great idea. And about 65,000 of my “closest friends” agreed.

The weather was perfect under a clear moonlit sky. That itself made it perfect to jam out to “Hotel California.”

With all four original members–[lastfm]Timothy B. Schmidt[/lastfm], [lastfm]Glenn Frey[/lastfm], [lastfm]Joe Walsh[/lastfm] (who had an amazing solo with his hit “Life’s Been Good”) and Texan [lastfm]Don Henley[/lastfm]–present and accounted for, the crowd did exactly what an audience does after enduring three days of live music: jam.

And how could you not jam with a set list like this:

Seven Bridges Road
How Long
Take It To The Limit
Hotel California
Peaceful Easy Feeling
I Can’t Tell You Why
Witchy Woman
Lyin’ Eyes
Long Road Out Of Eden
Walk Away
Boys of Summer
In The City
The Long Run
Life’s Been Good
Dirty Laundry
Funk #49
Heartache Tonight
Life In The Fast Lane

Encores:
Take It Easy
Desperado

For those who complained [lastfm]The Eagles[/lastfm] were too mainstream to close out ACL, I say you are wrong. The up-and-coming “buzz bands” played their sets, and some even impressed. But when you are talking about music–and that’s why we were all there–you can’t get any bigger than [lastfm]The Eagles[/lastfm]. I left the show wondering who the ACL promoters could get next year to top an act like this. Guess we’ll find out.

One footnote: It was reported that lead singer [lastfm]Don Henley[/lastfm] had a stint put in his heart earlier in the week (that is the reason we did not get a one-on-one interview). After canceling the rest of the current tour, the band made the decision to play ACL. Talk about playing “with heart.”

Here’s a photo gallery from [lastfm]The Eagles[/lastfm]‘ ACL performance.

The top ten bands (OK, it’s actually 11) at Austin City Limits 2010.
