New Neil Diamond Record A “Dream” Project

Artists are always paying tribute to [lastfm]Neil Diamond[/lastfm] as an original, a songwriter who’s career has spanned five decades, yet has always remained relevant. Now, Diamond is paying tribute himself to some of his favorite songs, recording a new album of covers!

Dreams, his new record, is due out November 2nd and will include Diamond’s take on songs like “Ain’t No Sunshine,” “Let It Be” and a big favorite of ours, “Hallelujah.”

“You never know how long you’ve got and a lot of these songs have been waiting for me to record them for 40 years,” he said.

Also included in the collection is a never-before-heard version of  “I’m A Believer,” a song written by Diamond but best known for the version recorded by a certain moppy-haired foursome in the 1960s. No, not that one. The other one.

Diamond is not the first well-respected songwriter to go the cover route; the late, great [lastfm]Johnny Cash[/lastfm] breathed new life into a host of songs with his reinterpretations as well. Do you think Diamond’s versions can do the same?

Covers are risky, especially when the original is well known and loved. However, I’m looking forward to Diamond’s take. Diamond’s voice is like comfort food for the soul. It is imperfect but deeply familiar and comforting in some intangible way that has kept fans like me listening for 40 plus years.

I am sure it will be a great album. I am a # 1 Neil Diamond Fan. I also am a Leonard Cohen fan and love the song “Hallelujah.”. I also grew up with Monkee posters on my wall as a teenager so I’m a beleiver that he can do that song justice since he wrote it. I didn’t think his movie themes album would do well but it was very smooth. I was married to the One Good Love song from his “country “Tennesee Moon” Album and his Christmas Albums have done VERY Well for a Jewish boy from New York don’t you think?
