“Material Girl” Slapped With a Law Suit
[lastfm]Madonna’s[/lastfm] new clothing line “Material Girl” is a material copy cat– or so says a California clothing company that filed a suit against the singer’s new company this week!
“Material Girl” is a joint venture between Madonna and her 13-year-old daughter Lourdes, who is said to be the creative fuse behind the clothing line inspired by 80’s fem-punk style.
But the company L.A. Triumph claims that they have been using this name to sell similar styled clothes since 1997. The company is not only seeking to reclaim “their” name they also want Madonna to turn over all the profits from her company!
L.A. Triumph filed the suit on Thursday stating they have been “continually selling similar clothes in similar retail outlets at similar price points under their Material Girl brand since at least 1997, and Madonna and her newfound company do not have the right to trade in the same space under this brand.”
“Gossip Girl” star Taylor Momsen is the face of the brand which debuted at Macy’s two weeks ago– but how can the material girl herself be the copy cat? Isnt Madonna largely responsible this fem-punk style and many other fashion trends not to mention the coining of the term “material girl”? But the company is insistig that the new company is creating “deception” in the marketplace.
Jury’s out on this one… Tell us what you think about battle of material girls!
