The Queen Of Soul & The Secretary Of State: Music Unites The Unlikely Collaborators
Republicans and Democrats are notorious for having opposing views on political issues, but in an unlikely duet between soul Diva, [lastfm]Aretha Franklin[/lastfm] — who made it well-known she’s a Democrat through and through — and former Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice proved that music is a great equalizer.
Who knew that Condi was a classically trained pianist under that tough political exterior. See their unexpected duet backed by the Philadelphia Orchestra at the Mann Music Center all to benefit inner-city music programs.
Judging from her eight-year run as George Bush’s Secretary of State, nobody would expect that there was a classically trained musician hiding in the fingertips of Condi Rice. She can really unleash some melodious flair on the ivories that perfectly pairs up with Aretha’s booming pipes during their duet.
Rice also performed various Mozart selections with the Orchestra before Franklin joined her on stage to perform a handful of her Motown hits. They closed their set with a rousing rendition of “My Country, Tis Of Thee.”
The pair put aside their political differences for the charity concert and even joked about their stances with Franklin saying, “We do have some things in common, but I am a Democrat forever, let me be very clear about that, alright?” and Rice responding “We’re all Americans and President Obama is my president as well.”
