Jones is a funk-soul vocalist with a voice and stage presence that transcends contemporary musical labels and cliques. Surrounded by Sylvia’s famous Gospel brunch fare of waffles, fried chicken, grits, greens, and catfish, patrons were surprised with a special performance of [lastfm]Mahalia Jackson[/lastfm]’s “I Sing Because I’m Happy” by none other than [lastfm]Sharon Jones[/lastfm].
[lastfm]Sharon Jones[/lastfm] is known for keeping it real and embracing her roots. Although Jones is a huge performer who sells out big venues like the Apollo, she still lives with her mom nearby in a Queens housing project. She expressed her desire to a Spinner journalist to resurrect her old-school Gospel foundation and how her music isn’t “retro”; real soul music has been around for ages in the hearts and voices of singers like her.
