Ray Charles Musical Opening Date Set Back
A new musical adaptation documenting the life of [lastfm]Ray Charles[/lastfm] is set to hit Broadway — but not when originally expected. Opening show day has been pushed back so fans will have to wait a little longer to see Ray Charles come to life through the magic of theatre.
Producers of the upcoming musical “Unchain My Heart” have announced the show’s opening has been pushed back to the spring rather than its planned opening in October. The theater venue also changed from opening at the Barry Theatre to the Shubert Theatre instead.
Producer Stuart Benjamin, who worked with Charles for 15 years and also produce the movie adaptation Ray, cited “logistical reasons” for the date and theater change.
Taking on the demanding role of Charles is actor Brandon Victor Dixon, with direction from Sheldon Epps and book by Suzan-Lori Parks. An earlier version of the play premiere here in California at the Pasadena Playhouse in 2007.
Below is a photo of Dixon portraying his role as the R&B/blues singer, does he look like the right match as the iconic [lastfm]Ray Charles[/lastfm]?
