This Weekend in Rock ‘n’ Roll History
Here’s what happened in chronological order during the two dates of THIS WEEKEND in the annals of ROCK!
Happy Birthday, first of all, to [lastfm]Trini Lopez[/lastfm] (May 15) who had his share of hits in the early ’60s. “If I Had a Hammer” and “Lemon Tree” were his two biggest. Both were also recorded by [lastfm]Peter, Paul and Mary[/lastfm].
May 15, 1957 — Yikes!! The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll had a very BAD day…[lastfm]Elvis[/lastfm] managed to INHALE a freakin’ CAP from one of his teeth and was taken to a hospital in L.A. to remove it from a LUNG!! If anything would get a guy “All Shook Up” it would be THAT!
May 15, 1963 — The winners of the 5th Annual Grammy Awards were announced on this day. A statuette for “Record of the Year” went to [lastfm]Tony Bennett [/lastfm] for “I Left My Heart in San Francisco.” Speaking of Trini Lopez and Peter, Paul and Mary, this is also the day PP&M got their Grammy, actually TWO of them, for “If I Had a Hammer.” It won them “Best Performance By a Vocal Group” and “Best Folk Recording” kudos.
May 15, 1963 — [lastfm]The Rolling Stones[/lastfm] came on board the Decca Records label. The signing was in London. Decca TURNED DOWN the [lastfm]Beatles[/lastfm] in 1962!
May 15, 1965 — [lastfm]The Byrds[/lastfm] entered the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time with their version of Bob Dylan‘s “Mr. Tambourine Man.” The song would hit #1 in June. By the way, only ONE of the Byrds played a musical instrument on this recording. OTHER studio musicians handled ALL of the OTHERS since the Byrds were a new group and hadn’t attained their musical “chops” as yet, at least not anything of RECORDING worthiness.
May 15, 1967 — Cupid visited [lastfm]Paul McCartney[/lastfm] and introduced him to the love of his life. It was on this day that Sir Paul met future wife [lastfm]Linda Eastman[/lastfm] at a Georgie Fame concert in London. Wedding Bells would toll two years later.
May 15, 1974 — [lastfm]Frank Zappa[/lastfm] (Mothers of Invention) and his wife announced the birth of their first little Zapster. The baby boy was named Ahmet RODAN Zappa (what would you expect from a pop who’d name two of his other children Dweezil and Moon Unit)? As you may have guessed, Ahmet’s middle name came from the Japanese monster movie of the same handle. It could have been worse: Ahmet GODZILLA Zappa anyone???
