So it’s the end of the night and you needed a little extra liquid courage to jump on that grenade for your friend… Or that really low-cut top got you five too many free drinks and now you can’t drive. It’s Cinco De Mayo and that means the cops are out for blood.
What do you do? How do you get home?
Don’t sweat it. We’ve got the low down on checkpoints, taxis and everything else you need to survive Cinco De Mayo.
Just hit more.
Unless you’re new to this whole drinking thing, you know better than to drink and drive. Even the ballsiest drivers have seen friends go down for a DUI and trust me, it’s not something you want under your belt.
(Not to be a buzz kill or anything, we’re just here to help.)
For those of you in Los Angeles, the LAPD has 4 checkpoints scheduled for this holiday weekend:
-Wednesday, 6 p.m. to 12 a.m., somewhere in the LAPD’s Northeast Area, which includes Los Feliz, Silver Lake, Highland Park, Mt. Washington, Glassell Park, part of Echo Park, Chinatown, Elysian Park, and more.
-Friday, 7 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., somewhere in the LAPD’s Newton Area, which occupies zones just south of downtown and east of USC.
-Friday, 9 p.m. to 3 a.m., somewhere in the LAPD’s North Hollywood Area.
-Saturday, 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. in the LAPD’s Hollywood Area
For you OC-ers, better have your guards up if you live in any of the following cities as checkpoints are planned here as well: Brea, Buena Park, Costa Mesa, Fountain Valley, Fullerton, Garden Grove, Huntington Beach, La Habra, Newport Beach, Placentia, Santa Ana, the UCI Campus and the Orange County Sheriff’s Department’s south contract cities.
FULLERTON: The checkpoint will be held from 6 p.m.-midnight in the 200 block of E. Commonwealth Avenue.
ORANGE: The Orange Police Dept. is conducting a DUI and driver’s license checkpoint from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. on Wednesday, May 5 at 200 The City Drive South.
For more definitive locations come tomorrow night, keep checking this twitter account as it will constantly be updating checkpoints as people come across them: http://twitter.com/checkpointsdui
Don’t wanna risk it? Here are some convenient cab companies you can call to chauffeur you around:
- Los Angeles/Hollywood— (877) 733-3305 LA Yellow Cab
- Santa Monica/WeHo/Etc—(888) 481-2345 Bell Cab
- Orange County— (800) 469-8294 MY TAXI YELLOW CAB
- South Bay—(800) 924-8294 South Bay Yellow Cab Co Op
Lastly, if you’re a AAA member, don’t forget the towing option available to all members when a vehicle (*wink*) “cannot safely be driven.” (I wouldn’t advise abusing this privilege however…)

NICE HAT, BUT DON’T BE THIS GUY.
Feel free to update the comments section of this post with checkpoints as you guys come across them. Help each other out!
