It’s easy to remember to recycle, to ride a bike or walk for short trips and to turn off the lights when leaving a room. But what about being green in what we consume? Here are five stores to visit when you need to buy something, but want to help the planet while doing so:

Restaurant: Akasha, Culver City, CA

Sustainable food preparation happens long before a cook gets involved. It’s about where the food comes from and how it was grown or prepared. Are the vegetables organic? Were any animals grass-fed and humanely treated? Akasha treads so lightly on the earth that the restaurant seems to float.

Clothing Store: Buffalo Exchange, various

Is there anything more earth-friendly than recycling? But unlike your local Goodwill or Salvation Army, the lightly-used clothes at Buffalo Exchange are purchased by fashion experts, who know what to look for. So instead of donations, you’re more likely to see designer labels that were well maintained by the original owner in order to maximize resale value.

Dry Cleaning: Colony Cleaners, Malibu, CA

The biggest environmental problem with dry cleaning is the chemicals used. Many cleaners use perchloroethylene, which is a fancy way of saying “chemical that might cause cancer and contaminates the soil.” Colony Cleaners is one of a handful of Los Angeles area cleaners that doesn’t use the chemical.

Grocery Store: Fresh & Easy, various

Along with a double-entente-laden name, Fresh & Easy is the best option for green grocery shopping, especially for the budget conscious. Even the store layout is meant to minimize carbon footprint, using as much natural light as possible and, at many locations, reserving parking up close for hybrid vehicles.

Pet Supplies: Pets Naturally, Sherman Oaks

Even your four-legged friends can be green! Pets Naturally only carries food with no artificial preservatives and non-toxic, cruelty-free supplies. If your pet has hippie tendencies, the store can help there, too, selling flower essences and homeopathic healing supplies.
