A “Close Call” for the KING of ROCK ‘N’ ROLL

elvis 210 A Close Call for the KING of ROCK N ROLL

We found a couple of things in Elvis history that happened on April 11th (though some sources give the date of the first event as April 10th).   ONE of them came very close to totally changing the face of Rock ‘n’ Roll!!

Elvis’ plane, travelling from Los Angeles to Nashville, almost crashed on this date (April 10 or 11th…must be because of the different time zones) in 1956!  He was just ten days away from scoring his very first hit; a tune that rocketed to #1 in the country and kept that lofty position for eight weeks: “Heartbreak Hotel.”

It should be noted that Hoyt Axton’s mother co-wrote that song with a relatively unknown country guitar player.

Getting just a bit off track before another Elvis Presley event on this date; Hoyt later wrote “Joy To The World” by Three Dog Night; another tune that made it to the top of the charts over 15 years later, making Hoyt and his mother the only mother and son to write TWO different national #1 songs!!

Another Elvis event on this day (1962)….his “Follow That Dream” movie (Elvis’ follow-up to “Blue Hawaii” and his 9th film), premiered in Ocala, Florida (near where it was filmed– it opened nationally six weeks later). Some of the supporting actors in the film were Ann Helm, Arthur O’Connell and Joanna Moore.

Don’t forget, “ELVIS ONLY” is an exclusive presentation of K-Earth 101 and can be heard every Sunday night at Midnight.  It’s a full hour of nothing but the music of “The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll!”

One more thing to let you know what a good person Elvis was.  Most of his acts of generosity and kindness were never public knowledge.  Elvis quietly paid hospital bills, bought people houses, supported families and paid off debts for friends, family and even total strangers.
