My First Time Meeting Jason Scheff of Chicago
The first time I met Jason Scheff, bass player and vocalist for [lastfm]Chicago[/lastfm], was during The K-EARTH 101 35th Anniversary Concert. While the air-staff was back stage having pictures taken with his group, Chicago, Jason came up to me and said “Shotgun I must talk with you after we perform. Can you meet me backstage after the show?”.
At the time, I couldn’t help but wonder what the guy, who took Peter Cetera’s place in the group Chicago, wanted to speak with me about. At the end of the show I was backstage curiously waiting for Jason when Robert Lamb came off stage and asked me if Jason had yet talked with me. When I said no, Robert asked me to remain where I was standing and wait. Then Jason came off stage and said “Shotgun I’m so glad you’re here, hang on I want to talk to you after our Encore”.
As I was watching Chicago perform their last song “25 or 6 to 4″ for our K- EARTH 101 audience at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater I was taken back when I heard Jason sing the following: “25, or 6 to 4444444444..bbbbbbbbbbbbreaaaaaaaa” my signature sound I make on K- EARTH every Friday at 5pm.
Wow! That blew me away. He then came off stage and said that he had grown up in San Diego listening to me on 1170-KCBQ. He went on the say that he and his brother used to entertain each other with “Shotgun Tom” Kelly impressions.
Jason then told me that he once called in on my radio show and won a Chicago 5 LP from me. Of course at that time he had no idea that one day he would succeed Peter Cetera in the group Chicago. So amazing! We talked a bit about radio in the 70’s and then he shared that his Dad, Jerry Scheff, used to play bass with [lastfm]Elvis[/lastfm] on his many TV and concert appearances, which I found extremely fascinating.
Then he asked if I needed a ride to my car, I said that would be great. So I got in the passenger side. When we reached my car, Jason took our picture with his iPhone and said “WoW! I can’t believe Shotgun was riding Shotgun in my Hummer”. We have remained friends ever since.
In a recent email both Jason and I expressed how much we are looking to forward to once again seeing each other this Saturday Night at the K-EARTH 101 Big Kahuna’s Luau Concert, at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater.
