Saturday night I had the good fortune thanks to a friend to attend Joe Torre’s Safe At Home fundraiser at the Nokia Theatre with Dodger all time Hall of Famer great Sandy Koufax.
The evening was moderated by T.J. Simers. T.J. acknowledged those attending in the audience, former Dodger owner Peter O’ Malley got a standing ovation with some commenting around me, “Buy the team back!” Don Drysdale widow Ann was there as was former Dodgers “Sweet Lou Johnson”, Tommy Davis, and current Dodgers Clayton Kershaw, and batting coach Don Mattingly.
One of the things that made the gathering great was Sandy Koufax displaying a sense of humor that he didn’t show during his playing days.
The Nokia Theatre was sold out with 7000 plus on hand, and over $750,000 dollars raised for Joe’s charity for abused kids. The Dodgers’ manager did say that they were flying back to Arizona that night for Sunday’s spring workouts which were cut short because the rain we got Saturday reached the Valley of The Sun Sunday.
By the way Sandy mentioned that before he and Don Drysdale held out for salary increases, around 1960 he was making $14,000 Dollars a year. In those days players had to get an off-season second job to supplement their income. Just thinking, what would number 32 be worth today? I’m thinking he would break the bank!
